This commission follows established criteria listed in the Landmarks Ordinance and uses the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation to review proposed changes. The commission also offers feedback on concept plans.
The meeting officially began at 9:03am. They were having technical issues. The chair will call each item on the agenda! The meeting was officially called to order and role was called.
Certificates of appropriateness is 1st on the docket. 1st on this list is Case24-088,Gordon Square Historic District CITYarts Peace Wall in Cleveland #5 – 4707 Detroit Avenue. This was tabled on Nov. 14th, 2024. Kids will create artwork that'll be displayed on the wall.
Stina Aleah will be the artist painting the wall. Onto Landmarks Staff recommendations. Additional images were needed, as well as possibly exploring possible locations on the building. Staff still doesn't recommend painting on unpainted brick. This would be a permanent install.
Rob Strickland put the motion, Role was called. There was some discussion about amending the motion. Michelle Anderson was the one trying to say something, but was late to the game when trying to amend the motion. Motion passes by vote of 4-2.
Next is Case 23-100: Ohio City Historic District (Tabled November 14, 2024) Bridgeworks – 2429 West Superior Viaduct, New Construction. Motion to untable was made. Role was called, motion passes unanimously. Updated presentation was made, granted partial approval.
The idea is to take one large building and to break it down into multiple buildings. Michelle Anderson said what we have is much better than she had in the previous meeting. Motion was made to approve as presented, but approval w staff on the colors & materials. Motion passes.
Next up is Case 24-081, tabled on Nov. 14. 1768 Fulton Road, New construction. It is a detached 2 family home. Michelle Anderson that this design is top heavy as well as the design doesn't feel welcoming, like the other surrounding buildings.
Motion was made, role was called, & motion passes by vote 5-1 w/ 1 abstain Onto Case 24-074: Ohio City Historic District (Concept/Schematic Review completed September 12, 2024) Shew Residence – 4208 Clinton Avenue, New Construction. This is for final.
They were lacking context last time, but they provided a lot of breathing room around the project(shown in 1st picture). Eastern elevation shown as well as Rendering. Landmark staff recommendations: they were concerned about the width and the windows (need for consistency.
The size of the front windows were addressed as well, 4ft by 7 inches tall; each. They're fixed direct gazed windows. Support of the project was made by the board. Motion was made, recommend to approve as presented, seconded. Role was called, Motion passes.
Finally on the certificates of appropriateness is Case 24-091: East 4th Street Historic District DORA Park – East 4th Street, New Construction. The pedestrian area will be even more friendly! Design review committee recommendations; reviewed this on Dec. 4th; finalizing details
This turns East 4th street into a giant patio. Pedestrian safety was taken into account. The shared safe is a good idea&it can move people off the street. The Dugout bar will have its own liqueur license. Michelle Anderson questioned residential. There will be hours of operation
Motion was made w/ recommendations & lighting plan / sidewalk for snow removal, seconded, role was called. Motion passes unanimously. This concludes certificates of appropriateness
Next up is concepts & schematic plans. 1st on this list is . Case 24-092: Stager-Beckwith House (University Club) Children’s Museum of Cleveland – 3813 Euclid Avenue, Addition, Ward 7: Howse This is very preliminary.
Next on this list is the last applicant: Case 24-093: Market Square Historic District, Ohio City Hotel – 1950 West 26th Street, New Construction Showing body of work as well. The site is a service parking lot. It sits next to Great Lakes Brewing Company.
Onto minute meeting approvals. Motion of approval was made, seconded, role was called; motion passes. Onto administrative reports, this is the final meeting for 2024. 1st meeting will be January 9th of 2025. It will be virtual as they're doing construction.
