The Commission on Chicago Landmarks (CCL) is charged with reviewing proposed alterations to protected Chicago landmarks, as well as recommending buildings and districts for designation as landmarks.

The meeting is chaired by Ernest C. Wong. Its nine members are appointed by the mayor subject to City Council approval.

It's considered an historically significant example with elements of the Venetian Gothic style
Now under discussion, the proposed landmark designation of the Mars Candy Factory at 2019 North Oark Park in the Austin neighborhood.

These two buildings were the subject of an editorial by the Sun-Times yesterday. It's an urgent matter because federal officials are otherwise recommending demolition.

Recommendation is to approve this work, with conditions. Historic Preservation Staff should have an opportunity to weigh in before any historic elements are removed during construction. Any damage should be repaired with similar materials.
