Minneapolis City Council
Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023
6:05 p.m. — 8:05 p.m. CST
350 S 5th St, Minneapolis, MN 55415 (Directions)
The council held a public hearing regarding the 2024 city budget.
- Speakers addressed varied topics such as compensation for Public Works and MPD employees, environmental causes, and Open Streets.
- By far the most common topic, however, was the impending closure of Camp Nenookaasi. 30 speakers spoke against the upcoming eviction of the camp scheduled for December 14. Residents spoke of the help the camp has provided to people in getting them housed and providing a safe and warm space in the interim.
- At the close of the meeting, several council members spoke to a need for the city to work with the state and the county to find a better approach to assist unsheltered residents.
Following the public hearing, the council unanimously adopted the 2024 City Budget, as amended by the committee. The council also adopted a few last-minute amendments offered by council members, which included allocating $100,000 for Green Zones, adopting an amendment to the financial policies for greater transparency in the addition of new city staff positions, and two minor technical and clarifying amendments.
